Database : DRAGONB8 From : Martin Smith (1700)
DNC v1.01 10/25/91 : Seattle WA
Martin provided the following 'thumbnail sketch" of himself.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
"I particpate on a fairly regular basis in weekend swiss type events.
I am a member of the USCF, the Wash Chess Federation and the Seattle
Chess Club. I also am a certified tournament director. I have won
several chess tournaments in my class. My main qualification [for
creating this database] is that I love the game, not that I'm a super
strong player. I not only love to play the game, but I am a fairly
serious student of the game. I study books, games, openings, help
others analyze postions, study computer-aided analysis, etc. this is
quite different than just playing a bunch of casual chess now and
then."
The main line being covered by the DRAGONB8 database is :
1. e4 c5
2. Nf3 d6
3. d4 cxd4
4. Nxd4 Nf6
5. Nc3 g6
6. Be3 Bg7
7. f3 O-O
8. Qd2 Nc6
9. Bc4 Bd7
10. O-O-O Qb8 !?
I believe that this database covers most of the critical lines for
black in this variation. This may seem rather specialized (it
probably is), but all the way through 10. O-O-O is considered THEE
main dragon line. Qb8 is an attempt to steer the game into channels
more familiar to black , while still retaining excellent attacking
chances in most lines. As in many openings, if White knows EXACTLY
what to do, he will come out with a plus... however, there are many
pitfalls (that look like reasonable moves) along the way.
